5 Things You Didn't Know About Airports

1. Federal air marshals fly among you, even though you don't know it.

These marshals are doing their best to act like regular passengers, and are looking for anything suspicious.

2. Water is the most frequently bought item at the airport.

You'd rather save your 5$? Bring an empty bottle and fill it up at the water fountain after passing the security.

3. The U.S. has the most airports. 

And it's not even close. America has around 13,500 while Brazil places second with a mere 4000. 

4. Bag inspections wasn't mandatory for all passengers until the 70s.

But after some bomb threats, new screening regulation were accepted. 

5. You receive unconscious messages as you move through the airport.

There are certain cues placed around the airport to subtly help you find your way. It can be a matter of lighting, color or design. For example, the shape of the signs can vary slightly between terminals. That is, you may want to trust you instincts the next time you get the strange feeling that you are going the wrong way!

Vagabonding by Rolf Potts

Vagabonding by Rolf Potts is an amazing book that offers a well-written philosophy on traveling. This book is essentially about the thought processes behind taking time off from your regular life to discover the world on your own terms. If you have been traveling before, you'll find that Rolf puts many of your unexpressed thoughts and feelings into words. If you haven't already, you will find yourself fired up about going abroad as it is truly inspiring.
The book helps you handle travel adversity, going back to your regular life, and making adjustments to the life abroad. However, it is not so much a book that keeps stacking up practical to-do's. So if that is what you are after you should probably look elsewhere. 

In my case, the physical book has taken on the road on its own. After borrowing it to a friend who continued to pass it on, we have now completely lost track of it. I suppose that that is a testament to Potts' ability to capture his readers.
